Although not distinct units for the purposes of scheduling, and operating under the auspices of the Patrol Division, the department has several units comprised of specially trained officers responsible for specific duties in addition to their regular policing assignments.

K-9 Unit
The department's K-9 unit is comprised of 3 teams with a supervisor overseeing canine operations. The police service dogs are certified annually with the Connecticut police Work Dog Association and the Norwalk American Police Work Dog Association. All of the Department's PSD's are cross-trained for patrol and narcotic detection. The dogs live with and are cared for by their handlers. Officer Holland is a Trainer for the North American Work Dog Association.

Mountain Bike Unit
The Mountain Bike Unit, is a group of officers trained and equipped to patrol the City on specially equipped mountain bikes. The bike officers are utilized primarily in the Community Policing function as well as regular patrol duties as manpower permits, to patrol high crime areas, and or densely populated residential or commercial areas. The bikes allow officers the contact with the citizenry that traditional walking patrols accomplished, but providing the ability to quickly and safely respond to calls in and around the surrounding area.

Tactical Unit
The Tactical Unit, is responsible for handling major incidents, including barricaded subjects, search and rescue; and high risk search warrant execution, among others.The team members are specially trained and equipped to respond to these types of incidents, and employ extraordinary means and training to safely intervene and bring about a successful conclusion, without injury to either officers or civilians.

SCUBA Unit
The SCUBA Unit working in conjunction with the Marine Unit, is a group of specially trained officers responsible for the safe handling search, rescue and recovery operations in Long Island Sound and the various inland waterways throughout the city.

Intelligence Unit
The Intelligence Unit is responsible for obtaining maps and other logistical information on various sites throughput the city and assist in planning and preparing for various circumstances that may arise.

Hostage Negotiation
As the name suggests, this unit is comprised of specially trained officers negotiators, who may be called in to successfully negotiate with suspects or other mentally disturbed or unstable persons.
